This is a view of the Newberry Shield Volcano way off in the distance. A shield volcano is one that oozes large amounts of runny basaltic lava over a very long period of time. This creates a gently sloping mass of stacked basalt flows and cinder cones. These volcanoes are not typically explosive. The Hawaiian islands are also shield volcanoes.
